Newground Together celebrate being shortlisted for prestigious national award!

Newground Together, the charitable arm of Together Housing Group, are delighted to announce that we are a finalist for the Employment Related Services Association (ERSA) Employability Awards 2021, in the Team of the Year – Crisis Management category. The winners will be announced during a hybrid networking event live streamed around the UK on Thursday 25 November.

Now in their ninth year, these awards celebrate best practice across the employment support sector. From stand-out frontline staff, job seeking achievements and exemplary employers; to teams and communities pulling together in the most extraordinary of times. The 2021 awards epitomise the very best of rising to ‘The Covid Employability Challenge’.

Elizabeth Taylor, ERSA CEO says: “We have been overwhelmed by the response to the ERSA Employability Awards and the truly inspiring work of all those who have gone above and beyond in what has been an incredibly challenging year. Thank you to all those who entered – you should be incredibly proud of your achievements – and a huge well done to all those who have made the shortlist. We can’t wait for the winners to be revealed at the end of November.”

During the height of the pandemic, Newground Together’s Employment and Skills Team responded to a plea of help from The Voluntary Sector Alliance in Calderdale. Christians Together Calderdale are a charitable organisation who support those in food poverty through their Food and Support Drop In (the main food bank in Calderdale) and The Banqueting Table (which offers a free hot lunch three times a week, served as a takeaway meal at The Gathering Place door throughout the pandemic).  Christians Together Calderdale, needed help as many of their long standing dedicated volunteers were advised to isolate at a time when the numbers who needed weekly food parcels increased dramatically and a large number needed food to be delivered (something which hadn’t previously been done). The Newground Together employment Advisors and Youth Work Team offered their help. Under the guidance of the experienced food bank volunteers and Christians Together Calderdale team at The Gathering Place, together they worked hard to keep the food bank open and upscale the service in a time of need:

  • Dedicated over 1,558 hours to the foodbank
  • Supported over 4,650 people in Calderdale
  • Secured over £20,000 of generous food donations from the public and businesses
  • Made 57 journeys to local businesses to pick up donations
  • Made hundreds of home deliveries to families and vulnerable people with health conditions
  • Made referrals to a number of other charities and agencies to help people access family support, financial support, emergency housing and mental health support.
  • Continued to deliver core employment and skills provision to tackle the underlying causes of food poverty.

Emily Pearson, Newground Together’s Community Programmes Manager, said: “Every single person involved in the partnership in the first lock down, really pulled together to make things happen, it wasn’t easy but the volunteers & staff at Christians Together Calderdale taught us everything we needed to know.”

We are regular users of their service, when we are supporting our customers who are in need. So it was a no brainer to offer our help, the work they do week in week out, year in year out, is essential and we were just glad we could help when they asked.

Emily continued, “We, along with the rest of the country, found ourselves in uncharted territory, we wanted to help in whatever way we could. The partnership happened overnight in super quick time. With nothing affordable on the shelves, the amazing generous donations from local businesses, time from the volunteers and support of the Voluntary Sector Alliance ensured a Calderdale wide coordinated response, to those most in need”.

Really any award goes to Christians Together Calderdale, we only helped for 4 months. They have been doing it for years and certainly taught us everything we know – A special think you to all the volunteers and the staff who guided us through that time.

If you can support their work please visit their donations page here to see how you can support the food bank and the work at The Gathering Place. They make sure the people who need it most, get that support. Thank you to Christians Together Calderdale for showing us all the amazing work you do and letting us be a part of that.
