A young Calderdale man is looking forward to future opportunities after finding out about a new Kickstart scheme.
Thomas Mundy, 20, had been working at a pub until he was made redundant. For several months he struggled to find other job opportunities as coronavirus restrictions continued.
This is when Thomas found out about Newground Together, an approved gateway for the Department for Work and Pensions new Kickstart Scheme. With the job struggles many young people are facing due to the pandemic, the scheme aims to create new job placements for 16 to 24-year-olds who are at risk of long-term unemployment.
The government pays the minimum wage, National Insurance and pension contributions of individuals for 25 hours per week over a period of six months.
Once Thomas knew about this new job opportunity he needed to prepare for the interview. This was when Thomas was referred to Moving Forward Together (MFT) a Calderdale employment project also delivered by Newground Together.
The project put Thomas in touch with Mansib Siam a Community Employment Advisor who could provide one-to-one support. They worked together on interview techniques and confidence building. He was also supported by Mansib to apply for funding which would help pay for transport to and from work until his first wage came through.
Now feeling more confident, Thomas went for the Kickstart interview and got a six-month paid placement as a Yards Person. Even when his placement ends, he will still receive support from MFT in order to find more training and work opportunities in the future.
Thomas is now looking forward to getting back into work and taking any training opportunities that come his way, “I’m really eager to get back into a routine and gaining some more work experience after not doing anything for a while. I am liking my role so far and I am looking forward to the opportunities this will open up for me in the future.”
Thomas added, “If anyone is considering applying for the Kickstart scheme, I would tell them to go for it! It can be hard to find work and experience right now, so this is a great opportunity.”
