I work at Offshoots Community Garden in Towneley Park, Burnley. It’s a beautiful acre garden including vegetable and herb growing beds, fruit orchard, bee-friendly plants, woodwork areas, poly-tunnels, a large Apiary with busy beehives and a viewing area and lots of lovely spaces to sit and relax or wander around, taking in the sounds and sights of nature. I am the Senior Project Officer so I essentially manage and develop everything that goes on at Offshoots. It’s a very varied and interesting job –things crop up each day and the site is full of surprises. We are open to the public so a key part of the job is chatting to our visitors, largely about sustainability and gardening. We have a brilliant bunch of volunteers who come a few times a week so I support them and organise the work for them to do from gardening to processing the wood we get from the Park Officers to working on maintenance of the site. We also have college and school groups who come so I organise and run those sessions too. I love the variety and the satisfaction in seeing Offshoots develop. And the benefit it has to so many people who visit and help out here.
